Openly gay inmates are placed in high visibility areas within the blocks. They can be celled alone or, if requested, be placed in protective custody. Vicarious liability states that all persons inside the wire are to be protected at all times and the most obvious steps will be taken to help insure this.

Rape is about power, not sex. Therefore, it would make sense that someone would not rape a "flamer"(I hate that word, but sorry) because they would assume that they would like it. I think their goal is to overpower and humiliate their victim as oppose to pleasuring them. So, would their victims most likely be a tough, straight guy?

In prison, often a straight or butch gay male may or may not want the "flamer" for sex. If a male uses M&M's to "paint" his/her lips, and eyebrows, wears turbans or homemade scarfs, &/or rolls their hair in toilet paper , to look effeminate; a male may take her for a housewife to wash socks & underwear, clean their (or his) cell, and run errands; there may or may not be sex involved....more of a "prestige" front is all that's involved. As is often the case in free world, a young, innocent, and attractive appearing male is desired. If he is with limited self-defense skills, he may be forced into a sexual relationship, and ultimately end up doing the same skills/duties of the "flamer"; with the guise that the "daddy" is offering only protection, and, "hands off" to anyone, unless they want to challenge the"ownership" of the "boy". It is often the "smart" thing for a defenseless young man to accept this role from a well muscled man than to risk (daily to weekly) rapes, gang-bangs and or being "pimped-out"...with the only alternative being administrative segregation...a self requested "solitary confinement", with only 1 hour per day out, to walk the cell block and shower alone. If a man's sentence is short and he can withstand the emotional, mental and social isolation; this being the only alternative to being in "population" and most likely joining a prison gang (which often requires a crime to join)...and if caught,,,longer sentence. The last resort is suicide, which is a long term solution to a short term problem.

Of course there are.

Since about 8% of the animal kingdom is gay, and about the same percentage of humans, it's quite likely that there are a similar proportion of inmates who are gay also.

By "gay" I mean those who fall in love with others of the same sex. Some gay folk are celibate, some sleep with various partners, some are monogamously partnered. Any of these situations could conceivably be in a prison environment as well.

However, in the prison population there is also another reality, common also in all-boy or all-girl boarding schools. Namely, there are certain prisoners who are not gay -- they really prefer romance with the opposite sex -- but they still might choose to engage in same-sex activity just because they want an orgasm, and there are not inmates of the opposite sex available to them. So they choose to use another inmate of the same sex to get off. And sadly there are perhaps some prisoners who use sex as a weapon, e.g., rape another inmate to show him "who is boss".

This (straights acting like gays) would be possible in the same way that a right-handed person could choose to use their left hand for everything, even though it is not natural for them. But when they have the chance, they revert to their right hand again, because it feels right -- it is how they are wired.

Is gay activity common among male prisoners serving life sentences?
I am not talking about prison rape, but rather consensual sexual activity, especially among male lifers who have no chance for parole. Would most male prisoners serving life sentences turn to other men, in order to fulfill their sexual needs, especially if they know that they will never have the chance to enjoy intimacy with a female?

There are male prison prostitutes that belong to other men who hire them out, then there are the prisoners who voluntarily pick a man for protection and yeah, sometimes they get hired out as well, then there are the guys who are strong enough to hire themselves out, and the guys who keep another guy for himself and won't loan him out at all. Many guys just use their hands or improvise a sex toy (banana peel, plastic bag with lube etc.) as there are not enough willing guys to go around and also there's the fear of diseases and penalties of getting caught. Relationships do not last for long as you are constantly being shuffled around among housing units, in and out the hole, transferred to a different prison as your classification level changes etc. The guys that get the worst of it are the guys caught and sold by the gangs. They actually have to get their butt holes stitched up because so many guys use them. Living nightmare for some but once a prison wife always a prison wife and you can never be a "man" behind prison walls again.

Acceptable for gay people in prison to be like any other gay people. Just because someone is in prison, rights don't change. They don't get acknowledged or considered to any great degree either, but one still has their rights. With being in jail, rights are greatly diminished due to circumstances,but there is still "due process." The guards are wrong in many ways for their conduct, but its prison. Most prisoners are treated less than human in many cases.
